The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a fully funded postgraduate scholarship for international students (i.e. those from outside the UK) to pursue master’s or PhD degrees at the University of Cambridge. Here’s what you need to know for the 2025/2026 cycle.
Quick Insight: About 80 scholarships are typically awarded each year to outstanding candidates from all over the world, with roughly two-thirds going to PhD candidates. You’ll get full financial support — fees, stipend, and travel.
1. What’s Covered / Funding
- University tuition / composition fees.
- Maintenance stipend: about £21,000 for 12 months (for single student). Pro rata for shorter courses. For PhD, funding is up to 4 years.
- One economy airfare at start and at end of programme.
- Visa fees & UK visa health surcharge.
- Additional, discretionary funding: academic development, fieldwork, dependent children allowance, hardship in special situations.
2. Who Can Apply & Eligibility
- Be a citizen of a country outside the UK.
- Apply to a postgraduate degree at Cambridge: PhD, MLitt (full-time), or one-year taught postgraduate course.

3. Application Deadlines & Timeline
- Applications open: early September 2024.
- Deadline depends on the course you’re applying for: either early December 2024 or 7 January 2025.
