Requirements to Study Medicine and Surgery in Nigerian Universities (2025)

Medicine Admission Requirements Nigeria

Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) is one of the most competitive courses in Nigeria. Below are the current requirements most federal, state, and private universities expect from prospective medical students.

Quick Insight: The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) sets quotas for each school. Even if you meet the minimum scores, admission remains highly competitive.

1. O’Level (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB) Requirements

Candidates must have at least five credit passes in one sitting including:
  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
Some universities accept two sittings, but most top schools insist on one sitting.

2. JAMB/UTME Subject Combination

UTME subjects for Medicine and Surgery are:
  • English Language (compulsory)
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
A score of 250 – 300+ in JAMB gives a better chance in top universities.

3. Post-UTME / Screening

After JAMB, universities conduct their own Post-UTME or screening. You’ll be assessed mostly on Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English.

4. Direct Entry Candidates

  • Acceptable A-Level or JUPEB/IJMB passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Zoology.
  • B.Sc. First Class or Second Class Upper in a related science discipline may also be considered.
  • All Direct Entry candidates must still meet the O’Level subject requirements.

5. Age Requirement & Course Duration

You must be at least 16 years old by matriculation. MBBS typically lasts 6 years (Pre-clinical + Clinical) plus 1 year of housemanship after graduation.

Final Thoughts

Medicine and Surgery in Nigeria demands outstanding grades and preparation. Aim for very high UTME scores, prepare well for Post-UTME, and ensure your O’Level results are strong. Check each university’s brochure for specific requirements and quotas.
Reminder: Requirements may vary slightly by university. Always consult the official JAMB brochure and the university’s website before applying.
