NBTE Blames Polytechnics for Delay in NYSC Mobilisation of Graduates

NYSC mobilisation polytechnic graduates

The National Board for Technical Education has blamed some polytechnics and tertiary institutions for delays affecting the mobilisation of graduates for the National Youth Service Corps programme. The regulatory body said many Higher National Diploma graduates remain stranded for months or even years because some institutions fail to comply with established academic procedures and documentation requirements.

Quick Insight: The NBTE said the delays are often caused by institutions admitting students into HND programmes without completing the mandatory one-year Industrial Training required after the National Diploma.

Violation of Mandatory Industrial Training

According to the NBTE, a long-standing policy requires National Diploma graduates to undergo a compulsory one-year Industrial Training before they can proceed to Higher National Diploma programmes. Some polytechnics reportedly bypass this requirement by admitting students directly into HND programmes immediately after their ND.

Impact on NYSC Eligibility

The board explained that when students skip the required industrial training period, their academic progression becomes incomplete. As a result, such graduates may fail verification checks and become ineligible for mobilisation into the NYSC scheme.

Role of the NBTE in Verification

NBTE officials said the board is responsible for regulating technical education in Nigeria and ensuring that polytechnic programmes meet accreditation standards. Only graduates from properly accredited programmes and verified academic records are eligible to participate in the national service scheme.

HND Admission Portal Introduced

To address the problem, the board introduced the HND Admission Portal, a national database designed to track students admitted into HND programmes. Institutions are required to upload student records to the platform so the board can verify academic history before graduates are cleared for NYSC mobilisation.

Clarification on JAMB’s Role

The NBTE also clarified that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is responsible only for admissions into National Diploma programmes. The board stated that JAMB does not manage HND admissions or the mobilisation of graduates for the NYSC scheme.

Final Thoughts

The issue highlights the need for polytechnics to strictly follow established academic procedures and maintain accurate student records. Ensuring proper compliance with training requirements and programme accreditation will help prevent delays and allow qualified graduates to participate in the NYSC programme without unnecessary setbacks.
Tip: Polytechnic graduates must complete the mandatory one-year Industrial Training after their National Diploma before progressing to the HND programme to remain eligible for NYSC mobilisation.
