University of Nottingham — PhD Studentship 2026 (Sustainable Aviation)

Sustainable Aviation PhD

The University of Nottingham, in collaboration with Airbus, is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD studentship (2026) in Sustainable Aviation. The project focuses on the design and evaluation of future fuel additives to support cleaner aviation and net-zero flight technologies.

Quick Insight: This studentship combines experimental, computational and analytical work, with industry partnership and time spent at Airbus’ Bristol site — a strong opportunity for candidates interested in sustainable fuels and applied aerospace research.

Degree Level

PhD (Fully funded studentship)

Research Areas / Available Subjects

Sustainable aviation fuels; computational chemistry; analytical chemistry; chemical engineering; mechanical & aerospace systems.
The role is hosted within the Mechanical & Aerospace Systems Research Group (Faculty of Engineering).

Project Overview

The research will investigate fuel additives for aviation: assessing mechanical properties, chemical performance, and environmental impact. The project may integrate machine-learning techniques and participate in fuel system design & testing with Airbus in Bristol.

Benefits

• Full tuition fees covered.
• Tax-free stipend: £24,000 per year (paid for 4 years).
• Primary base: University of Nottingham (with periods at Airbus, Bristol).
• Joint supervision & training by University of Nottingham and Airbus.

Eligibility

• Open to UK (home fees) citizens only due to funding restrictions.
• Applicants should hold (or expect) at least a 2:1 or First-Class honours degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
• Essential: knowledge/experience in chemical experimental techniques.
• Desirable: experience in computational chemistry, analytical chemistry or chemical engineering.

How to Apply

Prepare: CV, cover letter, academic transcripts.
Send these documents via email to: hadrian.moran@nottingham.ac.uk.
Informal enquiries: Prof. Carol Eastwick — carol.eastwick@nottingham.ac.uk.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview and then to make a formal application via the University.

Closing Date

Friday, 31 October 2025

Why Apply?

Work alongside industry (Airbus) and multidisciplinary academics on high-impact sustainable aviation research. Ideal for candidates wanting hands-on experimental & computational experience and exposure to fuel system testing and industry collaboration.
Note: This studentship is restricted to UK (home fees) candidates. Double-check eligibility & deadlines with the University’s official ad before applying.
