USA Student Visa for Nigerian Students (Guidelines)

1. Understand the USA Student Visa Types

Before applying, you must know the correct visa category:
  • F-1 Visa: For academic programs at colleges, universities, or high schools.
  • M-1 Visa: For vocational or technical schools.
  • J-1 Visa: For exchange programs, internships, or scholarships.

2. Get Admission into a SEVP-Certified School

Secure admission to a U.S. institution accredited by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). You will receive a Form I-20 (for F-1/M-1) or DS-2019 (for J-1), which is required for your visa application.

3. Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee

All international students must pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee before attending their visa interview. Keep your payment receipt as proof.

4. Complete the DS-160 Visa Form

Fill out the DS-160 form online at the U.S. Department of State website. After submission, print your confirmation page with the barcode—it is needed for your interview.

5. Pay Your Visa Application Fee

The non-refundable application fee (MRV fee) is required before scheduling your appointment. Make payment online or through approved banks in Nigeria.

6. Schedule Your Visa Interview

Book your appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or Consulate in Lagos. Prepare all necessary documents, including:
  • Valid international passport
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • SEVIS fee receipt
  • Visa appointment confirmation
  • Financial evidence to show you can cover tuition and living expenses
  • Form I-20 or DS-2019 from your school
  • Academic transcripts and certificates

7. Attend Your Visa Interview

Be punctual and confident. The consular officer will ask about your study plans, financial capability, and intention to return to Nigeria after your program.

8. Visa Approval and Travel Plans

If approved, your visa will be stamped on your passport. Make sure your travel date matches the entry date allowed on your visa (usually 30 days before your program starts).
Quick Tips for Success:
  • Be honest and clear about your study goals.
  • Organize your documents neatly.
  • Show strong ties to Nigeria to prove you’ll return after graduation.
  • Apply early—visa appointments fill up fast!
