Our History
Western Delta University was founded by a group of Urhobo Scholars under the auspices of the Urhobo Advancement Foundation (UAF) who saw the need for a privately financed university in the wetlands of Delta State, Nigeria. Since its establishment in 2007, WDU has offered access to a wide range of academic opportunities.
The university fosters a community of scholars and students who are committed to the pursuit of research and professional practice for the advancement of society. It is also driven by a passionate desire to uphold the highest ideals of public service, professionalism and philanthropy. Located in Oghara, Delta State, Nigeria, WDU was formally accredited as a private university by Nigeria’s National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2007.
We believe that good education is needed to achieve sustainable development. Thus, the aspiration of the University is to become a premier institution where the best and brightest in scholarship will have ample opportunity to excel.
A license to establish the University was granted in May, 2007, and an aggressive infrastructural development permitted its take off in January, 2008 in which the first batch of students, 149 in number matriculated into 21 degree programmes encapsulated in two Colleges – the College of Natural and Applied Sciences and the College of Social and Management Sciences – in April 2008. Our takeoff campus in Oghara now accommodates the School of Postgraduate Studies and the new College of Applied Health Sciences.
Western Delta University now has five colleges courses in diverse fields of study. They include
The College of Applied Health Sciences
