New National Curriculum: Full List of JSS & SSS Subjects (Effective September 2025)
The Federal Government has unveiled an updated national curriculum set to take effect from September 2025. It blends traditional subjects with modern, tech-driven disciplines to prepare Nigerian students for the global digital economy.
Quick Insight: At JSS level, students will tackle digital literacy and entrepreneurship alongside conventional subjects. At SSS, the curriculum includes advanced tech areas such as programming, AI, data science, and cybersecurity.
1. Junior Secondary School (JSS 1–3) Subjects
Students will study:
- Mathematics & Measurement: numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, rates, geometry, algebra, statistics, graphs, measurement.
- English Language: essays, advanced grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, oral skills (debates, speeches, drama).
- Integrated Science: physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, technology, lab safety.
- Digital Literacy & Coding: Microsoft Office, internet research, Python basics, Scratch, robotics basics.
- Social Studies: Nigerian/African history, geography, civics, economy, trade, money, entrepreneurship basics, global issues.
- Languages: advanced mother tongue and foreign language (French/Arabic) conversational fluency.
- Creative Arts: drawing, painting, crafts, drama, theatre, film basics, music.
- Physical & Health Education: sports, fitness, nutrition, reproductive health, first aid, drug abuse awareness.
2. Senior Secondary School (SS 1–3) Subjects
The curriculum expands to include:
- Mathematics & Advanced Applications: algebra, trigonometry, calculus basics, probability, statistics, financial and applied mathematics.
- English & Communication: academic writing, literary analysis, world literature, research skills, public speaking, journalism, fact-checking.
- Sciences: advanced physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science.
- Technology & Innovation: programming (Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS), data science basics, AI & robotics, digital entrepreneurship, cybersecurity.
- Social Sciences: government, law, economics, history, philosophy, ethics, entrepreneurship.
- Languages: advanced mother tongue literature and foreign language fluency (French/Arabic/Chinese optionally).
- Creative Arts & Innovation: fine arts, music, drama, media/film production.
- Physical & Health Education: advanced sports, mental health, first aid/CPR, leadership.
- Research & Project Work: final-year project with data collection, analysis, presentation, and defense.
