Commonwealth PhD Scholarships UK

The **Commonwealth PhD Scholarships** are now open for 2025/26, offered to exceptional researchers from **least developed countries and fragile states** in the Commonwealth. This is a fully funded opportunity for pursuing full-time PhD studies at UK universities, designed to foster leadership in research and development.

Scholarship Coverage

  • Full tuition fees covered through agreements with UK universities
  • Monthly living stipend: approx. £1,378 (standard) or £1,690 (London rate)
  • Return airfare between home country and UK, including mid-term home visit support
  • Allowances for warm clothing, study travel, and approved fieldwork expenses
  • Family support allowances where applicable (spouse/children)

Who Is Eligible?

  • Citizens or refugees of eligible Commonwealth countries classified as least developed or vulnerable, such as Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, etc.
  • Must reside permanently in eligible country and intend to start PhD in UK by September 2025
  • Must hold an upper second-class (2:1) degree, or a lower second-class (2:2) with a relevant Master's degree.
  • Must not already be registered for a PhD or MPhil in the UK or at home before September/October 2025
  • Must demonstrate financial need and not be able to afford UK studies without this award.

Development Priorities

Applicants must align their research proposal with the CSC’s development goals, which focus on areas like science for development, health, global prosperity, governance, resilience, and inclusion.

Application Process & Timeline

  • Applications must be submitted online via the CSC portal and through a nominated agency (e.g., national scholarship boards)—direct applications to CSC are not accepted.
  • Deadlines are strict—usually ending at **16:00 BST on 15 October 2024**.
  • The application timeline typically runs from September-November (application submission) to December (shortlisting), with decisions by mid-2025 and study beginning in September/October 2025.
