IJMB and JUPEB: Which is Better for Medicine in Nigeria?

IJMB vs JUPEB for Medicine
For Nigerian students aspiring to study Medicine in a private or public university, choosing between IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) and JUPEB (Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board) is a major decision. Both are advanced-level programmes that grant direct entry admission into 200 level, but they differ in recognition, cost, difficulty, and acceptance by universities.

Understanding IJMB

IJMB is a programme moderated by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria. It is widely accepted across many universities in Nigeria, especially in the northern and some western states. The duration is usually 9 to 12 months, and students take exams in three subjects relevant to Medicine (Physics, Chemistry, Biology).

Understanding JUPEB

JUPEB is moderated by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and is officially affiliated with many Nigerian universities. It is particularly popular among universities in southern Nigeria, especially private universities. Like IJMB, the programme lasts for about 9 to 12 months and requires students to take three relevant science subjects.

Comparing IJMB and JUPEB for Medicine

  • Acceptance: JUPEB is accepted by almost all private universities and many federal universities for Medicine. IJMB is also accepted, but some southern universities may prefer JUPEB.
  • Difficulty Level: Both require serious preparation, but JUPEB exams are often considered more standardised.
  • Cost: JUPEB fees are generally higher than IJMB fees.
  • Availability: IJMB study centres are more common in the north, while JUPEB centres are more common in the south.
  • University Preference: If your target school is in the south, JUPEB might be the safer choice; if it’s in the north, IJMB could be better.

Which Should You Choose?

If your dream is to study Medicine at a top southern private university like Covenant, Babcock, or Afe Babalola, JUPEB is the more straightforward path. However, if you are looking at universities like ABU, Bayero University, or other northern institutions, IJMB could be more cost-effective and equally valid.
Ultimately, the better option depends on your target university, location, and budget. Both pathways can lead you to Medicine — success will depend on your dedication and performance in the exams.
