JAMB to Allow UTME Candidates Use Personal Computers from 2027

JAMB UTME personal computer exam plan
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new plan that may allow UTME candidates to sit for examinations using their personal computers starting from 2027 under a “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) system.
Key Update: JAMB is considering a BYOD option where candidates can use their own computers for UTME, while exam security tools like flash drives will be used to prevent malpractice.

What JAMB Announced

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ish-aq Oloyede, explained that the board is working on a system that will allow candidates to use personal computers instead of only relying on CBT centre systems.

The idea is expected to start from the 2027 UTME cycle if fully implemented.

How the BYOD System Will Work

Under the proposed system, candidates may bring their own laptops or computers to the examination centre.

JAMB plans to insert a secured flash drive into each device during the examination to control access and reduce the risk of malpractice or unauthorized activity.

Why JAMB Wants This Change

The board says the BYOD option could reduce operational costs and also solve problems related to system failures sometimes reported during CBT examinations.

Officials believe that allowing candidates to use familiar devices may also reduce anxiety and improve performance on exam day.

Benefits for Candidates

If implemented, candidates may enjoy more comfort during examinations because they will be using devices they are already familiar with.

It may also reduce dependence on CBT centres and improve overall flexibility in exam administration.

Security and Exam Integrity

JAMB has emphasized that even with personal computers, strict security measures will still be in place.

The use of flash drives and controlled software environments is expected to prevent cheating and maintain the integrity of the UTME process.

Other Expected Changes

The Registrar also hinted that additional reforms are being developed and may be introduced alongside the BYOD system by 2027.

These reforms are still undergoing review and testing before final approval.

Final Thoughts

The proposed introduction of personal computers for UTME represents a major shift in Nigeria’s examination system.

If successfully implemented, it could change how large-scale exams are conducted, making the process more flexible while still maintaining strict security controls.
Note: The BYOD system is still a proposal and has not yet replaced the current CBT exam system.
