Understanding School Accreditation in Nigeria (WAEC, NECO, BECE, COBIS, CIS)
Accreditation ensures that schools in Nigeria meet minimum standards for curriculum delivery, exam preparation, and international recognition. Here’s a breakdown of key accreditations and what they mean for parents and students.
WAEC (West African Examinations Council)
WAEC accreditation means a school is approved to register students for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) — the standard exit exam for secondary education.
NECO (National Examinations Council)
Schools accredited by NECO can register students for the NECO Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, an alternative national exam to WAEC.
BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination)
BECE accreditation means a junior secondary school is approved to present candidates for the exam that determines promotion to senior secondary level.
COBIS (Council of British International Schools)
Schools accredited by COBIS are globally recognized as British international schools that maintain high standards of UK-style education, safeguarding, and governance.
CIS (Council of International Schools)
CIS accreditation is a mark of international quality, confirming that a school meets globally benchmarked standards for teaching, learning, and student welfare.
Note: Always check a school's official website or visit the Ministry of Education’s list of accredited institutions to verify their accreditation status before enrolling your child.
