ACCA Sustainability Hour Initiative to Benefit Over 144 Schools in Nigeria
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has launched the “Sustainability Hour” initiative, aimed at empowering school-aged children across Nigeria with knowledge and skills related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More than 144 schools will benefit from this six-month programme that targets students between the ages of 10 and 16.
Quick Insight: The programme delivers monthly interactive modules covering themes such as climate action, water and waste management, energy efficiency, poverty reduction and hunger alleviation — giving young learners a platform to engage with sustainability early.

• Duration: Six months
• Frequency: One module per month, each addressing a specific SDG theme
• Target group: Students aged 10-16 in both public and private secondary schools

• Interactive lessons and projects tailored to SDG themes like climate change, waste reduction and energy use.
• Opportunities for students to apply learning through practical activities, group work and advocacy.
• Support for schools to integrate sustainability into their environments and curricula — moving beyond exam-based teaching to action-oriented learning.
Final Thoughts
ACCA’s Sustainability Hour initiative marks a meaningful step towards embedding sustainability education at the secondary-school level in Nigeria. For participating schools and students, it offers a platform to explore, innovate and act on global goals in a local context. Stakeholders are encouraged to support the participating schools and ensure the sustainability follow-through beyond the modules.
Tip: If you are a parent, teacher or school administrator, ask for the initiative timeline, modules list and participation requirements so your students can make the most of the opportunity.
